Frinton perd à Abridge
ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Round 1
ABRIDGE G.C. VS FRINTON G.C.

Frinton Over 55’s team were presented with a Round 1 tie - away at Abridge Golf Club.

Record amounts of rain over a period of 3 months meant that most of the Frinton squad had played very little golf. Fifteen of the squad of 24 players made the trip to Abridge for a practice round, one week ahead of the round 1 match - although overhead conditions were fine and windy, underfoot was another matter - the wet boggy conditions made scoring very difficult, with the ball plugging more often than not.

Match day - Tuesday 9th April - conditions were purgatory - lashing rain and gale force winds - courtesy of Storm Kathleen made the opening drives very intimidating.
The Frinton team were denied - through injury - of their engine room - Rob Long (pulled a calf) and Chris Hemingway (twisted fetlock) pulled out 24 hours before the match - Wayne De’ath and Roger Deeble valiantly stepped in at the breach.
Frinton held their own with the first hole drives, probably just edging proceedings. Frinton’s first player - Stuart Grimwade had Club Captain Neil Hawkes on his bag. Together Neil and Stuart managed to reach the turn one hole ahead.

Overall, at the halfway stage, Frinton had partial parity, being ahead or all square in 5 of the11 matches, however, the Abridge team were three holes ahead in 3 of their six matches that were in contention. Frinton debutant - Mike Gent, 3 down at the turn, showed remarkable tenacity, fighting backto win his match 2 up; regrettably the other Frinton players trailing by two or more at the
halfway mark went on to lose: Toby Oliver (L3+2); Roger Deeble (L6+4); Wayne De’ath (L6+4).

The most emphatic winner for Frinton was Steve Paul. Steve’s low penetrating ball flight was a perfect foil ensuring an emphatic win (W4+2); Although Alan Keyte was 1 down at the turn, he plugged away and took the lead for the first time on the 17th hole, winning the 18th to run out winner (W2up).

Of the Frinton players in contention at the halfway mark, their matches ended as follows:
Stuart Grimwade (A/S); Darren Wells (L2+1); Peter Webster (L2dn); Alan Morrison (L3+1).

Frinton’s Bill Burns showed commendable pluck, holding on to win the last match of the tie (W1up). ‘Man of the match’ for Frinton was a toss up between Mike Gent and Steve Paul - terrific performances, away from home in dreadful conditions.

Match Result: Abridge G.C. 6.5; Frinton G.C. 4.5
