Jimmy Bruen success for Portsalon

Our Jimmy Bruen team made a dramatic start to their campaign on Saturday evening with a hard-fought win over a strong Strabane team.
The split-venue clash saw two matches settled on the 18th greens, one in Portsalon and one in Strabane, with Portsalon edging the verdict by 2.5 matches to 1.5.
The Portsalon side were down in all four games at one stage in the afternoon, but showed tremendous grit and determination to fight back.
On the road, the opening pairing of Cathal Canning and Brian Devlin were level thru 7 holes but ran into some good golf and were beaten on the 15th.
The second pairing of David Butler and Paddy McGowan had a real see-saw battle, with no side able to get 2up at any stage, and after they drew level on the 14th hole, both pairings produced some superb golf under pressure as they managed to par the final four holes with a watching crowd engrossed in the battle. Great playing from both teams and a half match was the least they both deserved.
That meant it all rested on the home games, where things were still ongoing.
Kevin Boyce and Donal Callaghan Jnr put a point on the board with a 3&2 win, ensuring the sole surviving game would either send it to a playoff or give Portsalon the victory.
Dermot Shields and Shane Sandilands survived after going 3 down early on, battling back to level matters on the 16th. With everything to play for and the pressure on, they won the 17th and claimed the decisive point with a half on 18, narrowly avoiding the need for a playoff back up in Strabane.
A terrific win against a strong Strabane side, commiserations to them on the narrowest of losses and much gratitude for the fine hospitality and sporting nature of the game on both courses.
Team Captain Enda McElhinney will now line-up his troops for a clash with Bushfoot GC from County Antrim in the next round.
