The scratch section lost by 7 points to 5 points. Our losing players were Steve Smart against a 2 handicap player and Tom Lee losing 1 down to a Durham County Senior's player, Stuart Brown playing off +1 handicap on our course. We had 3 halved games, these being Paul McGrath, Andy Hood and Taylor Briggs. Our winning player was Jacob Brown, who I congratulate on a fantastic win against a Durham County player Chris Brown, who would play at Billingham off +2. Well done lads, as always it’s very hard for our scratch team players but every week they just get on with the task and all we ask is for you do your best and enjoy.
In the handicap section we won by 11 points to 1 point. Our half point was won by Nic Winstanley who came back from 3 down. Our winning players were Daniel Spence 2up, Marc Symington 4&3, Darren Hurst 3&2, Dave McGreal 5&4 and not forgetting our birthday boy, Will Bellerby, who came back from 5 down once his super caddie Steven Lowth arrived to calm him down, to win 2&1. Well done to all our handicap players, you were magnificent on Wednesday night. The final result was a winning score of Billingham 16 points to Castle Eden 8 points, well done everyone.
Once again Neil and I would like to thank the following players who turned up to support the lads, as we say it’s a team effort so thank you to Phil Chadwick, Graeme Speight and Chris Pearson. A big thank you to our fantastic band of supporters; Vice-Captain Albert Spence, Colin Spence who caddied for his son Daniel, Stewart Openshaw, Jack Hurst, Terry Conlon and of course Kirsty Smart for her regular updates on how the ducks and the pheasants are all doing. Last but not least, one of our OAP’S Robert Scotney Smith who was the personal chauffeur to the TSU President Neil Hutchinson who arrived unannounced but was treated to excellent golf and good company by both players and officials of both Billingham and Castle Eden, thank you Robert. If I have missed anyone I apologise now.
A big thank you to Suzannah for stepping in for Beth while she has a well deserved holiday but unfortunately can not get away from the Billingham golfers James Collins and his motley crew as they are staying in the same hotel in Portugal (poor Beth ha ha). Now back to the important people, the staff who look after the hungry and thirsty players - Katy, Kasey, Archie and our new recruit Ava working for the first time, well done Ava, and not forgetting our chef Porchy. As always the food was excellent, enjoyed by both teams and I am told the Thai Green Chicken curry was also well received, including a lovely bait from Terry Conlon who ordered a takeaway but forgot to take with him so Dave McGreal enjoyed it said it was better than sandwiches ha ha!
Last but not least, a big thank you to John Dales and his greens staff on the excellent way the course was presented, getting plenty of great comments from both sets of players and officials. On another note, we also had a visiting party from Manchester visiting and playing our course on Wednesday and again the compliments were very good stating the hospitality and food at BGC were excellent.
Our next fixture is an away trip to Dinsdale Golf Club on Wednesday 2 July 2025. Neil will be looking forward to seeing as many of our supporters making the journey to cheer on the team watching some great golf, let’s keep our record going of having more support than the home teams! I am sorry that I won’t be able to make it as I will either lazing around by the pool or in some sunny bar enjoying a couple of drinks while keeping my phone at hand to keep up with the team results, and remember it’s got to be better than watching love Island or Coronation Street or Emmerdale on TV !!!
With Thanks
Tony The Tiger and Neil Kerr
