COURSE MANAGER’S REPORT
Another wet week here at Penn with 35mm of rain falling meaning the water table is getting higher and the course is becoming less tolerant to any persistent rainfall. We have been lucky that we only had to close the course on Tuesday this week to allow the course to recover from Monday's rain. We have had to use temporary greens throughout the week as a few greens need more time to drain and I have rested some others as I will continue to do over the winter.
Whilst the course was closed Tuesday the Greens staff along with the sapling volunteer group started work on the Gorse management on the 9th and 10th holes. As I have spoken about before, the plan is to regenerate the Gorse to improve the plant and remove any dead species around the course. A great start has been made and we will continue with this in the New Year. Also, on Tuesday we removed part of a tree from the left of the 10th tee which was rotten through the middle plus another limb of a tree that got damaged in the process. This has helped us create more areas on the 10th tee to enable us to spread the wear and create a different aspect of play on this hole. We will be doing more tree work on the course in the New Year and there will be logs available for members if required, please see myself or any of the team if you are interested as they do go quickly.
Also this week, whilst the course has been wet and we have avoided putting our machinery out on the course as much as possible, we have been busy tidying up the back of the shop and around the practice nets, re-installing sleepers outside the new barrier, installing new course information signs (which should be in use soon), barking trees on the 18th, cleaning the shoe cleaner, clearing leaves from ditches to help drain the course and servicing machinery. With the new barrier now in place we want to improve the first impressions of the club as you enter, we have plans to fence off around the rubbish bins and tidy around our work sheds and car park as part of the process. We do have a problem with pot holes before you enter the car park which we have filled with hard core in the past, however this is only a temporary fix and they soon wash out and sink again. If there is anyone in the club who could assist with this, who may be in this business or knows someone that is then please get in touch.
On Monday we took delivery of our new Ventrac rough mower which is a great addition to the Golf Club. I would like to thank the Board of Penn for their continued support since I joined 18 months ago. I’m very grateful for the backing I have received and hope we can continue the improvements both on and off the course.
The Ventrac has already been out on the course and will be out throughout the winter as this is its unique selling point. The Ventrac can be used 12 months a year making minimal mess thanks to its 8 Tires for better weight distribution, minimised impact on turf and its ability to operate on soft ground conditions. It can be used for various tasks like cutting rough, cutting brambles and longer rough, taking down saplings, towing a trailer and pulling attachments like slitters and brushes. We hope to add and borrow more attachments for it in the future to allow us to power rake, power brush, stump grind and trench to name just a few.
All staff spent a few hours on Monday completing training on both operating and servicing the machine.
Last year I did questionnaires with my staff to help the members know a little more about them. I know they were well received and since then we have had George join us as an apprentice greenkeeper, so this week I have included George's staff profile. I hope to do more in the new year whilst we get through the early months of the year and maybe include some staff from other departments.
Enjoy your weekend
Dave.
